I don't really have very interesting hair, which I think is a prerequisite for hippydom. Dreadlocks, curls, home haircuts, burnt hair, or shaved bald.

I have no tattoos of eastern mystical symbols, I do not smell of patchouli, and I dance like a B-boy, not a seizure victim. I do not say "Namaste" as much as I probably should, I have a full time job, and I have not done a complete colon cleanse recently. I don't know the words to bhangra music (Indian techno) and I am not living in a Tantra commune.

It's a shame, because I DO believe in peace and love and healthy food and groovy music and natural women and health and transcendence and social justice and sustainability and free love.

What did the word USED to mean, and why reclaim it from the bland?
*********************************************************

Here's an accurate definition of what the word still means to me (and why I'm tryin' to reclaim it!):

hip?ster (hip?ster)
noun

[Formed from hip2 + -ster]

Slang.

1. a person who is hip.
2. hepcat.
3. a person, (esp. during the 1950s), characterized by a particularly strong sense of alienation from most established social activities and relationships.
4.someone who rejects the established culture; advocates extreme liberalism in politics and lifestyle.

Well, we all know this is what we now hate about the wee buggers who stole the word - they're never gonna be rejecting anything in established culture or they'd have to start thinkin' for themselves!

Norman Mailer described the hipsters of the 50's & 60's as ~ possesing "a psychopathic brilliance" and "a dark, romantic, and yet undeniably dynamic view of existence." I don't see ANY 'o dat happenin' amongst the white-belted, predictable mammas boys 'n girls who dare to use the name now! And to add the other iver-marketed, over-used word prefixing "hipster" - URBAN! - well, that just pisses me off even more!

Now, a wee blurb from the

INTERNATIONAL HIPSTER COALITION
*******************************
*WE'RE RECLAIMING THE NAME, DAMNIT!*
http://tribes.tribe.net/internationalhipstercoalition?r=10448#

Well, being someone who believes that all things evolve, I still hold true that if the core belief and ideals behind the meaning of a word/definition/concept alters drastically, the word needs reclaiming by those, like me, who believe in the word's true meaning. It's roots are in jazz, and its ideals are forward-thinkin', cool, and smooth! It's slipped all nice into 50's slang, and still held true through the whole beat generation, the - poof! One day it appears again as crap! White belted turd-mongers. Irritating, classless poseurs - fuck - I could go on!

That's why I've started the IHC group!

I see the word "hipster" tossed around in use for the most predictable trend chasers and artsy phonies, as well as within the names of bars, clothes, and so on, who realize the marketing savvy behind the new misue of the term. What pisses me off the most is the combination of the overused words "urban" & "hipster". There's nothin' "urban" 'bout a bad pair of sneaks that cost the equivalent of 1/2 a months rent, or the need to own the "latest" techno-toy - nor is there anything even remotely "hip" or "hep" about this!

Then, there's the bland "metrosexuals"...what the fuck? You a man - be a man. You a gal - be the gal ya be, and don't let NOBODY on TV tell ya how your apartment should look, your clothes should be worn, or your sensitivities increased beyond the rational and natural - we are who we are! Common sense has been lost and taken over by books, TV shows, and trenda tellin' us what's best for us - USE YOUR MINDS, CATS!

Those "modern hipsters" (meaning in today's clubs) seem to have attempted to aquire some grating faux-vernacular that pales in comparison to the true hipster lingo, as it's used for rediculous things like "flubber" forbreast implants, "nancy" for ass, and the variation on "lettuce" or "cabbage" for money - they call it "kale"...How very sad their Hummer drivin', Blackberry usin', yoga absorbed worlds must be!

Where are the thinkers and movers and shakers? Where are the folks challenging boundaries, creating the new ideas? The folks who Mailer described as possessing "a psychopathic brilliance" and "a dark, romantic, and yet undeniably dynamic view of existence." The real hipsters are rebels and frontiersmen, where as today's poor bastards seem to be superficial and full of shite.

What happened to true subcultures? They exist, but they've become so commonplace and marketed to death that they're almost a parody of the true idea.

Hell, the terms "Bipster" (blue-collar hipster) and "The Schmooze" (a self-explanatory personality type that describes 98 per cent of any metropolis' media folk) show up in Robert Lanham's pathetic book "The Hipster Handbook", an unfortunate guide for today's hipsters!

What happened to the poeticism and jazz-backed slang of hipster lingo? The jazz rhythm behind things like "axe" for your musical instument, or "beat" for beatific and hep, or "bistin' your conk" for havin' a good time? Do ya "collar all my jive?" - do ya get it? Cool as an intellectual term describing a far-thinker, also used for someone who maintains it through any and all storms! Now, cats 'n kittens, do ya got your boots on? Ya get it yet?

Well, either way, all y'all who do join this group be jake with me! Plant ya now and dig ya later, Gator!

I really had fun observing them, how silly & pretentious they seem, etc. I laughed out loud at one guy & his Ironic Trucker Cap(tm), pulled down all funny on his head over his unwashed hair (another hipster trait, I think). I mean, the fucking trucker cap was just so ridiculous on this guy that it was funny. There were plenty of girls in ugly retro dresses & one was wearing knee-high rubber boots with her dress. I laughed again when I was talking about how they probably looked at me and my friend and thought, "Ewwww!! Non-hipsters!"

I think the probelm with our culture ("our" as in US pop culture) is that too many people know too much information about utter garbage. you don't have to LIVE anything anymore...you can just look it up on the web and overnight you're genius on the subject.

Hipsters are like locusts...they find something, they get into it, they suck it dry of all it's life and then they move on to the next thing. To me, that's the defineition of a hipster. Look at the current state of illustration and fashion...it's a joke. it's flooded with hacks and know-nothings who know people in high places. that's basically what's happened in the past 5 years...Nike dunks, bedhead, williamsberg, being a "designer", vice magazine, the retarded absolute WORSHIP of anything NYC or early 80's NYC, etc etc...it's all crap.

Each of us must flaunt our true individuality in the face of every hipster in the real world. Maybe we should experiment with being nice to them to show them we aren't impressed. They can smell fear.

hello. I joined this because I was curious about what you guys had to say about the following:

I do not consider myself a hipster because I do not care for trends and what is hot, and if I am cool or not cool.

but, I do possess many of those traits one will consider hipster.

I like "indie" music. My passion is British music, particularly britpop and new wave. But I have been into these since before I really heard the term hipster, indie, emo, etc. (i am 23). in high school i was sheltered and had no life. and i was into these things. i honestly love the music and to dance. i don't really care for standing around and discussing albums and reviewing them, for i don't feel i should because i don't know anything about creating music. i only know how to listen to it and enjoy what i hear.

i love fashion. not for the trends. i just like clothes that are pleasing to the eye. i like creating neat, unique styles. and yes, a lot of my clothing happens to be bordering "hipster". studded belts, colored hair (ok thats not clothing, i know), interesting clothes. i've always been into fashion. and i wear what i like, i do not let trends dictate me. i dont wear what i think is stupid. i think trucker hats are a stupid trend. so is wearing black rimmed glasses when you dont even need glasses. come on. i just throw clothes together in what i think is an interesting manner. i shop in thrift stores, i shop in malls. if it is a piece of clothing or an accessory i think is cool, and i like the design, i wear it. i do not like conservative clothing only in that i think it is boring.

i am an artist. i went through an art program at my university and have a bfa. and i have a full time job at a small corporate company because i need to pay the bills. i am interested in arts. i do not like a lot of the mainstream. i think there are a lot of sheep in the mainstream. but i also do think there are a lot of hipster sheep, blindly following the "indie/emo" trends. and i think those people are as bad as the mainstream mtv kids.

i have all sorts of friends and all sorts of interests. although i do admit i lean strongly towards the arts. i have friends who are similar to me, where we love art and music, for their forms, but we really dislike the whole scene. and yet you will find us at shows and clubs because we enjoy the music and we enjoy dancing. we just find a way to ignore the scenesters who are there to be seen or at the shows to just add it to their list of bands they have seen.

i can identify here in that i think the whole scene is absurd. i do not identify myself as a hipster for the fact that, to me, hipsters are sheep who are just trying to be in a scene and have a look. i have a friend constantly complaining about people he meets who will namedrop bands they have seen, and then he will ask them what they think of that band compared to another, and they wont even really be able to answer him, because they dont really know music.

i am just me. yeah, i happen to have a lot of interests in this so-called scene, but i am no scenester. i just happen to genuinely enjoy these things that have become infiltrated by trendoids wanting to ride upon what is "cool". i tihnk it is so lame getting hung up on what is "indie" and what is not. but all those people who are anti-hipster are just as bad as the hipsters. just be yourself!

sorry...didnt mean to go off.
but after me posting a little bit about myself, i am just curious as to your comments.

I was at the Canned Food Outlet today making groceries on the cheap and saw a big ol' display of <gasp> Pabst Blue Ribbon 24 packs on sale for 4.99. I smirked as I walked past it thinking of the hundreds of shaggy-headed, adidas wearing cheap-boozers who would cream over the sale. I was tempted to call a couple of self-proclaimed hipster friends of mine to alert them of the sale of their mascot beer, but stopped myself when I realized that if I did that flavorless piss water would be making an appearance at every bbq and party I go to for months. I would not be having it. No way, no how.

See, if I were a hipster, I would have cleaned out the Canned Food Outlet of their crappy PBR cases. Now they sit alone collecting dust next to the "2 for a dollar freeze dried potatoes" where they rightfully belong.

they were good, and quite funny.

took a smoke at the break, most of my party left - some stuff was still at the table (front and center - we got there very early to support the club) like my bag and sunglasses and drink. it's pretty clear the table is still occupied, anyway.

come back from smoking, find that a gaggle of HIPSTERS have commandeered all but three chairs at the table i and some acquaintances had been sitting at.

i sit, drink my drink, shift my bag, and a hipster girl turns around to grab another chair for her hipster man-friend, arriving even later than the rest of the late-comers.

i let her know that a friend of mine is coming back (i leave out the part about her and her friends taking all but three chairs - we would have wanted those back if my buddies hadn't left) and offer her the chair next to me (which is standing back from the table a bit, with another chair AT the table closer to her and in the way of her imminent chair-dragging.)

so she starts huffing and puffing, dragging the farther chair past the closer chair. i see she's having trouble, so i say "just take the one closer, i'll move this other one where that one is."

she says..."yeah, i thought so."

and, feeling curmudgeonly and tipsy, said "you thought WHAT? WHAT did you think?"

and she said, meekly, "oh, i mean, thanks , uh, for the chair."

called her on her shite. i never do this. but i did that night, and wow, did it feel great! she and her hipster freak friends arrived late, stole my chairs, and she has the balls to get in my face about which chair i offer from my table. what a hipster.

For the first time ever, five of the most cohesive-sounding, dark, brooding, 70s/80s punk-influenced California bands will unite on one stage. If you give a shit whatsoever about our rising music scene, come tomorrow to the Lava Lounge on 1533 N. La Brea. It's between Hollywood and Sunset.

The bands, and their respected influences, are listed below. And when we say "influence" we don't refer to direct copies (aka rip-offs), we mean that they remind us of the past while adding their own spin on things.

The Geisha Girls: Wire and Gang of Four in a modern nutshell. Note the New Order cover.

The Lips: An offbeat new-wave taste of English post-punk, 60s jangle-pop, and early 80s LA-roots dispatched by collective minds as a car wrecked, full on force.

The Pretty Scars: Brooding, claustrophobic. An experimental beauty at its finest. Peter Murphy would be envious.

The Matachine: A deconstruction of mapped out anti-structural principles with a handful of singers expanding off the notion handed to us by the No-Wave swoon.

The TV Tube Hearts: Wearing the Dolls and 50s guitar-pop on their sleeves, this band happens to be the LA group that appears to be raised outside of CBGB's in the late-70s.

1533 N. La Brea
Hollywood, CA
$5 or less
21+
Don't miss this gig. It could break or compose your regrets. Much like Russian Roulette.
